NEGU House of Hope

May 31, 2024

In the heart of La Quinta, California, there lies a haven for families facing the toughest battles imaginable: the challenges of childhood cancer. The House of Hope (HOH) stands as a sanctuary for these families, where they can find a little peace, feel supported, and create memories to last a lifetime.

Designed with the utmost care and compassion, the HOH is more than just a place to stay – it’s a refuge where memories are made, bonds are strengthened, and hope is cultivated. Its location was chosen carefully, close enough to major children’s hospitals for convenience, yet far enough away to offer families a break from the hospital environment, allowing them to feel like they’re escaping for a vacation, sometimes even in the midst of treatment.

From the moment Courageous Families step through the doors, they’re enveloped in an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Every detail, from the decor to the amenities, is carefully curated to bring joy and a sense of belonging. Founded and decorated with Jessie’s heart and personality in mind, each decision of design and purpose reflects a commitment to creating a space that brings smiles and comfort to families in need.

Courageous mom Raquel shared that their stay was “just what my family needed after two long years of trauma no family should go through.” She expressed how much they appreciated that every part of the home was designed to bring the entire family together, especially after exhausting days spent in the hospital. “Holidays, birthdays, outings were afterthoughts. We couldn’t think about the future,” she said. Visiting the House of Hope and “feeling the support from NEGU” reassured them that, no matter what challenges they face, they can overcome them together as a family. Raquel even celebrated her birthday during their five-day stay at the HOH, making the visit even more special.

Each family is welcomed with a special bag filled with essentials and tokens of encouragement, including NEGU bucket hats, pool floats, and branded cups – a small gesture that speaks volumes about the care and compassion woven into every aspect of the HOH experience.

Inside the HOH, families find everything they could possibly need for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. From pool towels and coolers for outings to a well-stocked craft room for moments of creativity and bonding, every aspect of the house is thoughtfully designed to cater to the unique needs of families facing childhood cancer. The space is filled with whimsical touches and thoughtful gestures, from a game room stocked with board games to a collection of children’s books donated by NEGU staff and other Courageous Families. The yard, with its turf for play and custom-made “Never Ever Give Up” trellises, serves as a space for families to pause while being inspired to NEGU.

The HOH fosters a sense of connection among families. Encouraging notes left by previous guests, shared experiences in the craft room, and moments of laughter around the firepit all serve as reminders that families are not alone in their journey. Brave mom Emily shared how each member of her family found their own connection with the house, whether it was bonding over cooking with the special cookbooks provided, engaging in activities in the craft room, or enjoying mini-golf and shuffleboard. She expressed, “My daughter spent the entire day in the craft room. Each of my children could feel the warmth and love within the house.”

As families navigate the challenges of childhood cancer, the House of Hope stands as a beacon of light, offering rest, support, and the promise of brighter days ahead. In this space, hope truly embodies this home.
