One of my all-time favorite movies is Patch Adams, starring Robin Williams. The film is based off of the life story of Hunter “Patch” Adams an American physician, comedian, social activist, clown, author and founder of the Gesundheit Institute. Each year, Adams organizes a group of volunteers from around the world to travel to various countries and dress as clowns in an effort to bring humor to orphans, patients, and other people. He once said, “Spread joy and chase your wildest dreams.”

In a very dark time of his life, Adams faced a fork in the road—either choose joy or continue down a life of self-destruction. From that moment on, Adams decided to commit to living a life of happiness and purpose and discovered his passion for bringing joy to others.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if people chose joy when faced with that same fork in the road? How many people would be relieved of suffering? I know, easier said than done- especially when it seems like the deck is stacked against you. But it is possible!

If you could bring joy to one person in your life who would it be? Your mom dad, sister, or brother? Or how about a classmate, a co-worker or even someone who you do not know? There are so many people in our lives and in our communities who could use a boost of joy.

I hope you choose today to think big and give yourself permission to spread joy in great ways. Let’s do it!
