The National Cancer Institute recently issued their report, a Snapshot of Pediatric Cancers. cancer and kidsAccording to this report, with over 12,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States, cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death for children 0-14 years of age. Brain cancer, tumors in the central nervous system and leukemias were noted at 50% of all new pediatric cancer cases.

According to the National Cancer Institute, the 5 year survival rate for children with cancer is about 83%–a 20% improvement from the 1970s.

The National Cancer Institute also reports to have increased its investment in pediatric cancer research by over $20 million in the last four years to $195.5 million in fiscal year 2011.
