Alexis spent so much time with her care team at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., throughout her cancer treatment that the doctors who treated her became like family. They were there for all her ups and downs, and kept her upbeat even on the days she didn’t feel so great.
But when it came time for her to decide on her ideal wish with her friends at Make-A-Wish, she knew what she wanted to do: something that would get her closer to her desire to study medicine one day and be just like the doctors who treated her and other kids like her battling different forms of cancer.
“I chose the Introduction to Medicine course at Oxford mainly due to Dr. [Mark] Mogul and the impact he has had on my life, as I aspire to be like him one day,” she said. “Now, I have a perfect vision of my future in college and medicine. With this wish, I will get to experience both of my visions.”
With the help of a generous charitable donation from Bristol-Myers Squibb, Alexis’ wish came true.
“Thinking about the wish helped keep my mind occupied while I was going through treatment,” Alexis said. Before she embarked on her trip to London with her family, a team at Bristol-Myers Squibb hosted a British-themed party to get her wish started right! And for the next two weeks, Alexis immersed herself into the course. She juggled time learning about things like penicillin and disease with trips to the Divinity School (where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed!!!) and the Alexander Fleming Laboratory.
Seeing Alexis’ wish come true is so inspiring! The message of hope, strength, love and NEGU is especially strong in September as we recognize Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Go Gold!
