In August, the Jessie Rees Foundation partnered with the LA Galaxy for a series of heartwarming and inspiring events designed to bring joy and unforgettable experiences to Courageous Kids fighting cancer. The journey began with a special day at LA Galaxy Sports Park and extended throughout September, where these brave children and their families participated in multiple activities as part of the Galaxy’s ‘Kick Childhood Cancer’ initiative.
August 12th: LA Galaxy Photoshoot
The excitement kicked off on August 12th when five Courageous Kids and their families arrived at the LA Galaxy Sports Park. These special guests were outfitted with their very own LA Galaxy warmup tops—identical to the ones the players would be wearing for the game on September 21st! Courageous Kids were also invited to participate in a photoshoot for the LA Galaxy’s Kick Childhood Cancer campaign, where they would grace the cover of this important initiative for the month of September.
After striking a pose, it was time for more fun. The kids got to play arena soccer on one of the outdoor fields, creating lasting memories with their families and NEGU staff. The day ended with a VIP tour of the LA Galaxy stadium, where the families learned about two upcoming September events, adding even more excitement to their journey.
September 6th: LA Galaxy Boot Making Lab
On September 6th, Erik and Stacey Rees welcomed 11 Courageous Kids and their families for a special boot-making experience at the Galaxy’s practice facility. The kids had a unique opportunity to meet the first-team players, coaches, and staff while watching the Galaxy squad practice up close. But the highlight of the day was the chance for the Courageous Kids to design the warmup shoes that the players would wear. Armed with bright colors, the kids decorated the shoes with their names, doodles, and playful characters—adding a personal touch to game day gear.
Jessie’s dad, Erik Rees, shared Jessie’s story with the players and coaches, speaking about how meaningful moments like these are to families fighting cancer. The event was filled with joy, laughter, and connection, as the Courageous Kids left their creative mark on the LA Galaxy’s gear, ready for the upcoming game.
September 18th: LA Galaxy Staff JoyJar Stuffing
The Galaxy’s efforts to support kids fighting cancer with the Jessie Rees Foundation continued, when the LA Galaxy front office staff and the LA Galaxy U14 team came together for a team-building event to sponsor a Mobile JoyFactory and stuff 200 JoyJars. The Galaxy team heard inspiring stories, including one from Jessie’s chemo buddy, Cade Spinello, and then got to work stuffing!
In true competitive spirit, the staff compared their JoyJars to ensure Jessie’s rules were followed while creating these beautiful gifts. It was a day of laughter, teamwork, and joy, as the Galaxy family united in support of our mission to encourage every child fighting cancer to Never Ever Give Up.
September 21st: LA Galaxy Game Experience
The much-anticipated September 21st LA Galaxy game against the Vancouver Whitecaps marked the culmination of this incredible partnership. Fourteen Courageous Families, decked out in their matching LA Galaxy warmup tops, were invited to experience the game in a way they would never forget.
Before the match, the families were treated to a VIP experience, including a private reception and an opportunity to meet the players as they walked out for warmups. The Courageous Kids joined the players on the field, where they were recognized as Cancer Heroes during the national anthem. As the game began, the kids and their families enjoyed prime seats, cheering on the Galaxy in their battle on the pitch.
The halftime show brought another special moment, as Courageous Kids took to the field for a playful and competitive soccer match against the LA Galaxy mascots! Seeing the children laughing and playing soccer, simply being kids again, was a heartwarming experience for everyone involved, especially their parents. One Courageous mom beautifully summed up the experience, “The multiple day visits really make the kids feel a part of the team and totally immersed, versus a one-time visit. It allowed for the kids to truly connect to the players and form a bond. They were so comfortable with them during game day and you could see the kids walk out there with such confidence. The players made them feel seen and so special. I will never forget this experience for as long as I live…You do a fantastic job of making our kids feel like they are the ‘lucky ones’.”
The game ended with the Galaxy winning 4-2, capping off an unforgettable day!
A Journey to Remember
This experience was more than just about soccer; it was about creating joy and memories for kids fighting unimaginable battles. This partnership with the LA Galaxy provided these Courageous Kids and their families with unforgettable moments that showcased their strength and resilience. From personalized warmup gear to designing shoes, stuffing JoyJars, and stepping onto the pitch, these families were celebrated and supported at every turn.
The LA Galaxy’s Kick Childhood Cancer initiative is a testament to the power of sports and community, proving that together, we can make a difference in the lives of these Courageous Kids fighting cancer. We are better together!
